It has been highly reccomended that I drink 2-3,4-6oz. glasses of red wine a week for antioxident action. Now, my husband is in the proccess of dealing with his second kidney stone and tests have indicated a third still in his kidney measuring 6mm in size(ouch!! I know).so we now both need to think about doing this.
I have done some research on the red wine issue, and discovered that the darker the wine skins are at time of harvest, the higher the amount of antioxident counts. I have also heard that it is the alcohol in the wine that magnifies or intensifies the antioxidents. So that stuff I know. What my dilemma is, is that I know absolutely nothing about brands and what tastes better. I prefer white wine and Zinfandels as far as taste goes, but for the medicinal properties of red wine, I need advice as to what tastes good. When trying a few different cheap brands,I always resort to buying grape juice and adding it to the wine to make it palatable, but I want to know if there are some good red wines(the darker the better)out there that are not ultra dry or bitter.I have discovered that with some, the cheap brands are.........yucky.But we are deffinately not well off financially so cost is deffinately an issue.
SO,I would like some reccomendations from anyone who knows their red wines.I anxiously await your comments.

Hmmmm...gee, I am not a connoisseur of wine, but does merlot qualify? It's very dark, some brands are quite pleasant, and I know it is pretty popular with wine drinkers.
I just thought of something else, but I'm not sure what your palates like. There are Jewish wines out there that you might like. They're often not too expensive, but don't taste cheap. Because the wine must be kosher, no impurities or additives are allowed, and it is sometimes those things that can just as easily taint flavor as enhance it. Kosher wine uses the skins from the grapes to create the color, the darkness, the richness...and they rely on the grapes own natural sweetness (sugar) for sweetening, so the wines are considered naturally healthier and better by a lot of people. There are some different "levels" of darkness/redness achieved during the making and aging processes, so some will be less dark and sweet while others are extremely dark and sweet. You might want to look into something like this. I, unfortunately, can only think of two brands right now...Manneschevitz (oh, sorry, I killed that spelling!) and Kedem.
Believe it or not I am VERY familiar with both of those brands. The company I work for is a private supplier of all sorts of international and organic products,so I will definately look into that.THANX!!
I have tried some Merlot's but just cant seem to get past the bitterness. But that's not saying there may not be brands out there that are better than others.I guess I should just keep experimenting.
Let me know what you think about the kosher wines I mentioned...and I'm sure there must be other brands, too. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a wine-tasting at the Kedem Winery, so I could sort through the many types to determine which I most liked. I found one of the grape wines to be way too sweet..but, then again, it's supposed to be a dessert wine! I hope you get to try some of these and find the ones that you like. (Maybe your company has a descriptive sort of list that you can see...and stores that sell wine with a wine expert on the premises might be able to guide you.)
I wish I could help ya out, but I know absolutely zilch about wine. I don't even drink the stuff. Ask me something I know about and I'll be happy to jump in there and give you my thoughts!!
thanx Islandgirl, for the offer and I will keep you in mind for future ref.

Wine can be wonderful! Are you looking for a reason for wime (health is a great reason) or are your really looking for a good source of antioxident?
Antioxidents!! I really dont care much for the taste of red wine but I'm told the redder the better and that its the alcohol that stimulates the antioxident benefits, over just fruit juices that are high in antioxidents. So I will choke it down if need be.When all else fails I usually end up mixing grape juice w/ it anyways to make it more palatable.
I am currently looking at a product called.........Xango???, But it is extremely expensive and money is definately an issue at this time.
I suggest you look at fortifyflow.com (not a sales page-INFO only) and find the page on glutothione. This is normally destroyed when taken by mouth. The ultimate antioxident. Listen to Dr. Keller audio. The man was chosen as one of the best two hundred scientists of the 21 Century. Awesome credentials. Get back to me!. To your health!
ERROR CORRECTION: Dr. Keller was chosen one of the top two THOUSAND scientists of the 21 century.
Thanx for the tip awanderer,KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!!!!
Have you thought about drinking anti-oxidant juices instead? The acai berry is said to have the highest anti-oxidant count in the world. It can be found in drinks like Mona Vie (be careful not to get sucked into the MLM part of that though).
If you are set on wine, Shiraz is a lovely red. Yellow Tail, an Australian company, makes a great one that sells for about $7 a bottle. One of my patients is retired wine dealer, and he recommended it to my staff, they love it! If you want a little extra fun, try looking up the legend of the Shiraz grape.
Thanx for the tip dunedindentist,I have been looking into several different juices but I hav'nt checked this one yet.I have seen it in stores I have worked in tho. You are the second person I have had to suggest the Yellow Tail brand or any of the Australian wines for that matter so I will look into it.I think variety will be good,so with enough different things to choose from,I think I could settle into a routine real soon. and I do like reading up on the proccessing of wines and such so I will check out the Shiraz info like you suggested. THANX AGAIN for the input.
